Managing the 40 Tesla Superconducting Magnet Project

Dave Lunger will speak on Managing the 40 Tesla Superconducting Magnet Project. Building the 40 Tesla Magnet is actually two projects, one being the design of the magnet, and the other being the magnet construction. Dave will touch on the similarities and differences in the planning necessary for each project, and the types of controls that are necessary for each one. The attendees of this presentation will gain insight into the ways of working associated with National Science Foundation funded projects, and the mandatory content for plans and reports to this key stakeholder.
Dave is currently the Director of Project Management for the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) at Florida State University. In this role, he provides leadership, vision, and direction in the planning and implementation of significant projects that expand the NHMFL’s portfolio of magnets used for scientific research. Before joining the NHMFL, Dave served 27 years in the United States Air Force. He is a retired Colonel who practiced the principles of project management in various assignments, most notably on the staffs of the Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, where he managed and directed multi-million dollar weapons test programs. Dave commanded two operational test and evaluation organizations, where he utilized the critical project management methodologies to assess the suitability and effectiveness of USAF weapons systems. Dave is a rated Master Navigator and graduate and former instructor in the USAF Weapons School with over 2,500 flight hours in the B-52.
